Scholarship Fund

In 2003, thanks to David & Claire Blaise, The Mary's Shelter Scholarship Fund was established through the Berks County Community Foundation. This is a Fund that anyone can contribute to and is dedicated to encouraging the young women to continue their education whether it is at a college or trade school.

For information on making contributions to the Scholarship Fund, please contact Christine Folk, Executive Director at 610-603-8010.

The Programs at Mary's Shelter & Mary's Home have always had a strong educational component. Educational opportunities are offered on-site and with in the Berks County community. Some of our successes include:

  • In 2011, seven young women completed their CNA certification and are currently employed at area hospitals and retirement centers.
  • In 2008, two more former residents graduated from college with bachelor degrees.
  • In May of 2006, two former residents graduate from Alvernia University with four year degrees. These young women began their college studies while living at Mary's Home for two years. They were able to develop the skills necessary to handle the demands of maintaining their own apartment, school, work and parenting which enabled them to complete their education upon leaving our program.
  • From 2003 to 2005, the agency continued to experience the same high number of educational successes including several young women who graduated from Certified Nursing Assistance programs, Medical Technical Assistance programs, and secretarial programs. Several residents maintained part-time employment while continuing their education.
  • In 2002, ten young women completed their GED studies and four continued on to college.
  • In 2001, six clients were enrolled in high school - four graduated and two successfully progressed to the next grade.
